Biography
Russell Jones is an Edinburgh-based
writer and editor. He is the director of Black Blade Literary (a literary
consultancy for genre fiction writers).
Russell was the UK's
first Pet Poet Laureate, is the author of the Beast Realms novel trilogy
(Portal Books, 2020-2021), The
Wilds graphic novel (Tapsalteerie, 2021), and six collections of poetry:
cocoon
(Tapsalteerie, 2020), “Dark
Matters” (Tapsalteerie, 2018), The
Green Dress Whose Girl is Sleeping (Freight Books, 2015),
“Our Terraced Hum” (in Caboodle,
Prole Books, 2015), "Spaces
of Their Own" (Stewed Rhubarb Press, 2013) and "The
Last Refuge" (Forest Publications, 2009). His literary novel, Bucket
List, is due for publication in 2024 (Polygon).
Russell was the deputy editor
and poetry editor at Shoreline
of Infinity (2015-2023), a Scottish science fiction magazine (“Best
magazine/periodical” – British Fantasy Society in 2018). He is the editor
of Where
Rockets Burn Through: Contemporary Science Fiction Poems from the UK (2012),
was a guest editor for The
Interdisciplinary Science Reviews, is the co-editor of Umbrellas
of Edinburgh: Poetry and Prose Inspired by Scotland’s Capital City (2016, 2020) and Multiverse:
an international anthology of science fiction poetry (2018).
Russell's writing has
been widely published internationally, winning recognition in awards and
competitions including The Best Scottish Poems, The Eric Gregory Award, The
Venture Award, the Bridport Prize and The Charles Causley Poetry Competition.
Russell has written 10 novels, a novella and numerous children's books. His YA
novel, The Talkers, was shortlisted for the $50,000 Half the World Global Literati Award and
his novella, Dating Superman, was shortlisted for the Signo
Novella Prize. He has published dozens of short stories in literary
journals, books and magazines, including stories for children in Disney’s Animal
World magazine.
Russell has a PhD in Creative
Writing from Edinburgh University and has published on the poetry of Edwin
Morgan. He has taught Scottish Literature and Creative Writing at
undergraduate and postgraduate levels, published non-fiction, including travel
articles, academic articles and restaurant reviews. Russell has organised and
hosted around 100 literary events in Edinburgh and online. He can be
